Real vs Fake Oud Oil: What You Should Know Before Buying

I was testing a few oud samples for my fragrance ideas when an unexpected [late-night inspection of a newly arrived oil batch] made me realize how tricky it is to understand real vs fake oud oil in today's market. Real oud oil comes from naturally infected agarwood trees and has a deep, complex scent that changes over time—starting woody and smoky, then becoming slightly sweet and warm. Fake oud oil, however, is usually synthetic or diluted, which makes the fragrance smell flat and fade quickly. Another clear difference is texture and color—genuine oud tends to be thicker and darker, while fake oils often look light or watery. The biggest sign is how the scent behaves on skin: real oud evolves in layers, while fake versions smell the same from start to finish. Since authentic oud is rare and expensive, very cheap “pure oud” is often not real. Knowing this helps avoid low-quality oils and choose something truly premium.
